David Begley (born 1972, Dublin, Ireland) is a multidisciplinary Irish artist who lives and works on the coast of Wexford. He studied at NCAD (National College of Art and Design) in Dublin and at the West Wales School of the Arts. Begley works as a visual artist, writer, filmmaker, botanical ink and charcoal maker, and arts educator. His practice spans drawing, painting, monotype, animation, video, and sound—often incorporating hand-made botanical materials. Since 1996, he has exhibited nationally and internationally, with shows in the USA, Australia, the UK, France, China, and Greece. His monotypes have been selected for exhibitions such as the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in London, the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, Contemporary Masters of Printmaking in Cork, and Oriel Mostyn in Wales. One of his most acclaimed works, the charcoal animation Breathe, created with driftwood charcoal on Fabriano paper, has been shown at The Linenhall in Castlebar, Wexford Arts Centre, and festivals in Athens, Belfast, and Carmarthen. The film has been praised for its dark, surreal, and poetic atmosphere, with lyrical imagery and dreamlike transformations exploring themes of birth, death, and regeneration. Begley is also known for his craft-based approach: producing his own charcoals from willow, ivy, and driftwood, enhancing the tactile and emotional connection with the work. His work is held in public collections including the Environmental Protection Agency, the Contemporary Irish Art Society, the Irish National Teachers Organisation, the Office of Public Works, and Wexford County Council. As an educator, he facilitates adult workshops in venues such as the Chester Beatty Library (Dublin), Mermaid Arts Centre (Wicklow), Irish National Heritage Park, Butler Gallery (Kilkenny), Garter Lane Arts Centre (Waterford), and through the UK-based online program Plants and Colour. He also mentors professional visual artists. Begley has led community art projects for children, notably The Monk’s Garden, in collaboration with schools and Wexford County Council, which resulted in the documentary The Keepers, screened at various international festivals.
