İsmet Arasan is a prominent Turkish director, screenwriter, and author, born in 1959 in the village of Istranca, Çatalca. After graduating from Istanbul Davutpaşa High School, he completed his cinematic education at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Cinema and Television, in 1985. During the early stages of his career, he served as an assistant to legendary figures of Turkish cinema, including Halit Refiğ, Suha Arın, and Kartal Tibet. Specializing in documentary filmmaking, Arasan has directed over thirty documentaries, earning a reputation for his poetic and human-centric storytelling. He is best known for acclaimed works such as "The Last Voices" (Son Sesler, 1987) and "I Have Many Words for Adakale" (Adakale Sözlerim Çoktur, 2008). His films have been screened at numerous international festivals and have received several prestigious awards. Beyond directing, Arasan is an active voice in the industry as a scriptwriter, narrator, and educator. He has held significant roles in professional organizations like the Association of Documentary Filmmakers in Turkey (BSB) and the History Foundation. Often referred to as the "Dervish Filmmaker" within cinema circles, he continues to work as an independent artist, focusing on themes of memory, culture, and social history.
